Correlation between self esteem and self regulated learning on IX grade students in SMP X Bandung (a study on students who have big five of grade ranking)

dc.description SMP X Bandung is a private school managed by PGRI and it is accredited A in subdistrict Buahbatu Bandung. Nearly 60% students of SMP X have low academic achievement and break school regulation such as smoking, being absent without permission, saying something rude, bringing motor vehicle and alcoholic liquors. Students’ social-economy background and their parents’ education is low. Nevertheless, not all students break school rules and have low academic achievement. Some students show good behaviour such as comepleting school assignment ontime, acting up to school regulation, and having good academic achievement from the first year of the school. Based on the interview, they can maintain their academic achievement because of their parents support. The efforts they did to maintain their academic achievement are doing homeworks ontime, evaluating their scores from time to time, making time to discuss a hard task, reading books to solve a hard task. The results show that the students have high self esteem  and self regulated leaarning. The objective of the study to find out the realtionship between self esteem and self regulated learning on students who have big five of grade ranking in class IX in SMP X Bandung. The method used is correlational study with 25 students of cass IX who have big five of grade ranking as the sample. The instruments used are self esteem questionnaire of Christopher J Mruk theory (2006) and self regulated learning questionnaire of Zimmerman theory (1989). The results show that they have Rs= 0,701 based on Guilford table, it means that their self esteem and self regulated learning have high correlation. It can be conluded that there is a tight relationship between self relationship and self regulated learning on students who have big five of grade ranking in class IX in SMP X Bandung.
dc.description SMP X Bandung merupakan sekolah swasta yang di kelola oleh PGRI dengan status akreditasi A di Kecamatan Buahbatu Bandung. Hampir 60% siswa di SMP X memiliki prestasi akademik rendah dan melanggar peraturan sekolah, seperti merokok, bolos sekolah, berkata kasar, membawa kendaraan bermotor serta membawa minuman keras. Latar belakang sosial-ekonomi dan pendidikan dari orang tua siswa yang bersekolah di SMP X juga tergolong rendah. Walaupun demikian, tidak semua siswanya menampilkan perilaku melanggar aturan sekolah dan memiliki prestasi akademik yang rendah. Ada beberapa siswa berada pada ranking 5 besar di kelasnya, yang menunjukan perilaku positif, seperti; mengerjakan tugas tepat waktu, mentaati peraturan sekolah, serta mempertahankan prestasi akademik dari kelas VII . Berdasarkan hasil wawancara mereka bisa mempertahankan prestasi akademik karena dukungan dari orang tua sehingga mereka merasa mampu dan layak untuk mempertahankan prestasi akademik di sekolah. Usaha yang mereka lakukan agar bisa mempertahankan prestasi akademiknya yaitu, mengerjakan PR tepat waktu, mengevaluasi niali yang diperoleh, meluangkan waktu untuk diskusi tugas yang sulit, membaca buku untuk memecahkan persoalan tugas yang sulit. Dari hasil wawancara mengindikasikan siswa memiliki self esteem dan self regulated learning yang tinggi. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui seberapa erat hubungan antara self esteem dengan self regulated learning pada siswa ranking 5 besar kelas IX di SMP X Bandung. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah korelasional. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian populasi dengan siswa kelas IX ranking 5 besar  sebanyak 25 orang. Alat ukur yang digunakan adalah kuisioner self esteem yang diturunkan dari teori Christopher J. Mruk (2006) dan alat ukur self regulated learning yang diturunkan dari teori Zimmerman (1989). Berdasarkan hasil pengolahan data dengan menggunakan koefisien korelasi Rank Spearman diperoleh Rs= 0,701 menurut tabel Guilford termasuk ke dalam kriteria korelasi tinggi. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang erat antara self esteem dengan self regulated learning siswa ranking 5 besar kelas IX di SMP X Bandung.
