Abstract. College student who are in the early adulthood in accordance with their developmental tasks, have the ability to monitor their behavior, infact there are early adults who spend most of their the time to access the internet then they get negatives impact on their lives. They increase the time to use internet and ignore their responsibilities and they health conditions. They assume that the internet is a solution to returning their negative emotions to be more positive. They access not only to one specific content of internet but there are also variety of internet such as social media, online streaming and games online. This study is a correlational study with 358 college student in Bandung Islamic University. The aim of this study is to see the correlation of self-control and problematic internet use. The measuring instrument used to measure the self control constructed by researchers and it based on the theory of Averill (1973), and to measure the problematic internet use used the Generalized Problematic Internet Use2 (GPIUS2) constructed by Caplan (2010). Rank Spearman analysis technique was used to analize the data and the result obtained r = –0.484 with p = 0,000. There is a negative relationship between self control and problematic internet use. It means, the lower the self control control, the higher the problematic internet use for internet active user colleger at Bandung Islamic University.Keywords: Early Adulthood, Problematic Internet Use, Self Control.Abstrak. Mahasiswa yang berada pada masa dewasa awal sesuai dengan tugas perkembangannya memiliki kemampuan untuk memonitor perilakunya, namun terdapat individu dewasa awal di Universitas Islam Bandung yang menghabiskan waktu mereka untuk terus mengakses internet hingga memberikan dampak negatif dalam kehidupannya. Mereka terus menambah waktu penggunaan internet dan mengabaikan tanggung jawab dan kondisi kesehatan mereka. Mereka beranggapan bahwa internet merupakan solusi untuk mengembalikan emosi negatif mereka untuk kembali menjadi positif. Mereka mengakses tidak hanya terbatas pada salah satu konten internet yang spesifik saja tetapi berbagai konten seperti media sosial, streaming online dan games online. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian korelasional dengan subjek penelitian sejumlah 358 mahasiswa/i di Universitas Islam Bandung. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat keeratan hubungan antara self control dengan problematic internet use. Alat ukur yang digunakan untuk mengukur self control dikonstuksikan oleh peneliti dengan mengacu pada teori dari Averill (1973), sedangkan untuk mengukur problematic internet use menggunakan alat ukur Generalized Problematic Internet Use2 (GPIUS2) yang dikonstruksikan oleh Caplan (2010). Teknik analisis penelitian ini menggunakan Rank Spearman dan didapatkan hasil r = –0,484 dengan p = 0,000, yaitu terdapat hubungan negatif antara self control dengan problematic internet use. Artinya, semakin rendah self control maka semakin tinggi problematic internet use pada mahasiswa pengguna aktif internet Universitas Islam Bandung.Kata Kunci: Dewasa Awal, Problematic Internet Use, Self Control. |
