dc.description Diarrhea is the leading cause of child mortality under 5 years. The current treatment of diarrhea is antibiotics that have various side effects. In addition to antibiotics, there are various alternatives have been used for treatment. Guava leaves have been used as a traditional medicine for diarrhea. This leaf has been studied to have various benefits such as antibiotics and antidiarrhoeal. The aim of the study is to assess the antimicrobial activity of methanol extract guava leaves by measure the zone of inhibition and by determine the Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) on Shigella dysenteriae. This research is experimental with descriptive quantitative approach. The methods used are disk diffusion method and dilution method. The research conducted in Microbiology Laboratory of Padjadjaran Faculty of Medicine in May-June 2017 and extraction at SITH ITB Laboratory. Obtained average inhibition zone results are 15.08mm, MIC 3.125%, and MBC 6.25%. This means that this extract has a weak antibacterial effect. The active substances such as flavonoids and tannins expected as antibacterial compounds.
dc.description Diare merupakan penyebab utama kematian anak dibawah 5 tahun. Pengobatan diare saat ini adalah dengan antibiotik yang memiliki berbagai efek samping. Selain antibiotik, terdapat berbagai alternatif yang digunakan untuk pengobatan. Daun Jambu biji telah lama digunakan sebagai obat tradisional untuk diare. Daun ini telah diteliti memiliki berbagai manfaat seperti berperan sebagai antibiotik dan antidiare. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menentukan aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak metanol daun jambu biji dengan melihat luas zona hambat serta konsentrasi hambat minimum (KHM)  dan konsentrasi bunuh minimum (KBM) pada Shigella dysenteriae. Penelitian ini dilakukan secara eksperimental dengan pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode difusi cakram dan metode dilusi.  Penelitian dilakukan di Laboratorium mikrobiologi FK Unpad pada bulan Mei-Juni 2017 dengan ekstraksi di Laboratorium SITH ITB. Didapatkan hasil rata-rata zona hambat adalah 15,08mm, KHM 3,125%, dan KBM 6,25%. Artinya ekstrak ini memiliki efek antibakteri yang lemah. Kandungan zat aktifnya seperti flavonoid dan tanin diperkirakan berperan sebagai zat antibakteri.
