Abstract. Increased public enthusiasm for horror film genre can not be separated from the myths that accompany the film, both the story raised in the film and things that happen during the process of cultivating the film. Moreover, the film "Pengabdi Setan" by Joko Anwar works in various countries and created the language version of the country. It is evident that horror films are increasingly loved by the public. This study uses the theory of Ekman and Friesen is the theory of Cumulative Structure that discusses the meaning related to body movement and facial expression rather than behavioral structure. In this theory, there are five categories: emblems, illustrators, regulators, adapters, and depictions of feelings, each of which provides depth to the meaning related to the communication situation. This study aims to see how the film "Pengabdi Setan" communicates non-verbal symbols of fear as a symbol of fearful emotions, seen from the meaning of denotative and connotative meanings, as well as to see which myths are identified in the meaning process. The method used is qualitative research method, with semiotic analysis approach taken from Roland Barthes analysis model.The conclusions that answer the research question are the symbol of fear represented by the bells, the song of the “Kelam Malam”, Saga Seed, Old house, and the character of Mother. The myth contained in this film is a myth should close the window and door of the house before maghrib also the belief that the soul of the dead is still at home for 40 days.Keywords: Emotion, Fear, Pengabdi Setan, Joko Anwar Abstrak. Meningkatnya antusiasme masyarakat terhadap film bergenre horor tidak lepas dari mitos-mitos yang menyertai film tersebut, baik cerita yang diangkat dalam filmnya maupun hal-hal yang terjadi selama proses penggarapan film. Ditambah lagi film “Pengabdi Setan” karya Joko Anwar yang tayang di berbagai negara dan dibuat versi bahasa negara tersebut. Hal tersebut menjadi bukti bahwa film horor semakin digandrungi masyarakat. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori dari Ekman dan Friesen yaitu teori Struktur Kumulatif yang membahas mengenai makna yang berkaitan dengan gerak tubuh dan ekspresi wajah ketimbang struktur perilaku. Dalam teori ini, terdapat lima kategori yaitu emblem, ilustrator, regulator, adaptor, dan penggambaran perasaan, di mana masing-masing memberikan kedalaman pada makna yang berkaitan dengan situasi komunikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana film “Pengabdi Setan” mengkomunikasikan secara non verbal simbol ketakutan sebagai simbol emosi takut, dilihat dari makna denotatif dan makna konotatif, sekaligus juga melihat mitos-mitos apa saja yang ikut teridentifikasi dalam proses pemaknaan tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif, dengan pendekatan analisis semiotika yang diambil dari model analisis Roland Barthes. Adapun kesimpulan yang menjawab pertanyaan penelitian adalah simbol ketakutan direpresentasikan oleh lonceng, lagu Kelam Malam, Biji Saga, Rumah Tua, dan tokoh Ibu. Mitos yang terdapat dalam film ini adalah mitos harus menutup jendela dan pintu rumah menjelang maghrib juga kepercayaan bahwa arwah orang meninggal masih berada di rumah selama 40 hari.Kata kunci: Emosi, Takut, Pengabdi Setan, Joko Anwar |
