Abstract. West Java is in the top rank of the highest students dropping out of school. In the 2015/2016 and 2017/2018 academic years, 19,479 students dropped out at the junior high school level. One of the causes of dropping out, especially for students with low socioeconomic status as vulnerable parties, is the lack of student participation in learning activities which is a form of low student engagement. One of the factors that influence student engagement is the relationship between teachers and students which can be manifested in the form of teacher support. This research was conducted because there are still some differences between previous research and phenomena in the field, especially for students with low socioeconomic status. The purpose of this research was to determine how closely the relationship between teacher support and student engagement. This research used a correlational method with a population study of 93 students of SMP "X" Bandung. Measurements were made using a modification of the perceived teacher academic support scale (PTASS) and a modified student engagement scale (SES) which is distributed via google form. The results showed that there was a strong and significant relationship between teacher support and student engagement on students of SMP "X" Bandung (r = .686, p <0.01). All teacher support dimensions correlated with student engagement, with instrumental support (r = .641, p <0.01) as the dimension with the strongest correlation.Keywords: Student Engagement, Teacher Support, Educational Psychology, Socioeconomic Status.Abstrak. Jawa Barat menempati peringkat teratas terkait jumlah siswa putus sekolah terbanyak. Pada tahun ajaran pendidikan 2015/2016 dan 2017/2018 terdapat 19.479 siswa yang mengalami putus sekolah pada jenjang SMP/sederajat. Salah satu penyebab putus sekolah terutama pada siswa dengan status sosial ekonomi (SSE) rendah sebagai pihak yang rentan terdampak adalah kurangnya partisipasi siswa dalam kegiatan pembelajaran yang merupakan bentuk dari rendahnya student engagement atau keterlibatan siswa. Salah satu faktor yang memengaruhi student engagement adalah hubungan antara guru dengan siswa yang dapat diwujudkan dalam bentuk teacher support atau dukungan guru. Penelitian ini dilakukan karena masih terdapat beberapa perbedaan antara penelitian terdahulu dengan fenomena di lapangan terutama pada siswa dengan status sosial ekonomi (SSE) rendah. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui seberapa erat hubungan antara teacher support dengan student engagement. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah korelasional dengan studi populasi sebanyak 93 orang siswa SMP “X” Bandung. Pengukuran dilakukan menggunakan modifikasi alat ukur perceived academic teacher support scale (PTASS) dan modifikasi alat ukur student engagement scale (SES) yang disebarkan melalui google form. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang kuat dan signifikan antara teacher support dengan student engagement pada siswa SMP “X” Bandung (r = .686, p < 0.01). Seluruh dimensi teacher support berkorelasi dengan student engagement, dengan instrumental support (r = .641, p < 0.01) sebagai dimensi yang memiliki korelasi terkuat.Kata Kunci: Keterlibatan Siswa, Dukungan Guru, Psikologi Pendidikan, Status Sosial Ekonomi. |
