Urban Heat Island adalah sebutan suatu keadaan dimana suhu di perkotaan lebih tinggi daripada daerah pinggiran di sekitarnya. Salah satu upaya untuk mengkaji persoalan pemanasan iklim mikro di wilayah perkotaan dapat dilakukan melalui pendekatan Urban Heat Island (UHI) dengan menggunakan citra landsat. Fenomena UHI ini sebenarnya sudah diinvestigasi oleh Luke Howard (seorang British manufacturing chemist dan amateur meteorologist, Wikipedia) pada tahun 1810-an, yang merupakan akibat dari kurangnya vegetasi sebagai penutup lahan dan rendahnya kelembaban tanah. Tujuan Penelitian adalah untuk untuk menurunkan tingkat suhu panas di Kota Tanjungpinang dengan menggunakan media pohon sebagai pereduksi panas yang disebabkan oleh munculnya pulau panas perkotaan. Metode Pendekatan yang dilakukan berupa identifikasi sebaran suhu permukaan di seluruh Kecamatan di Kota Tanjungpinang yang didukung oleh analisis suhu permukaan menggunakan pengolahan citra satelit. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan menghitung jumlah pohon yang dibutuhkan sebagai media penurun panas atau luasan lahan hijau yang dibutuhkan untuk menurunkan suhu panas permukaan di Kota Tanjungpinang.
